Nepal is a small landlocked country with variance in land topography. Nepal has got three division due to its land topography, i.e. Himalayan, Hilly and the Terai. But, if we talk about the habitation of animals and plants, Nepal is one of the best place with varieties of plant and animal species. However, due to population increment in Nepal, deforestation, pollution, unfavorable climate, global warming, etc. is taking place. This is why, disturbance in wildlife habitat and plants are taking place due to which extinction in plants and animals are taking place. Here, are some of the top animals that are under legal protection by Nepalese government under 1973 National Parks and Wildlife Act.
Habre:
Habre, internationally known as Red Panda is one of the most cute and endangered animals in Nepal as well as world. It is mainly found in Himalayas in cold region. Habre looks more than cat rather than a panda. It is small in size with reddish-brown fur with long shaggy tail and waddling gait. It mainly lives by feeding on bamboos. The scientific name of Habre is Ailurus Fulgens. Various international organization like IUCN are engaged in protecting Red Panda as its population has become less than 10,000.
Ek Singhe Gaida:
Ek Singhe Gaida, internationally known as One Horned Rhinoceros is one of the huge and rare animals in Nepal. Its scientific name is Rhinoceros Unicornis. It has got pinkish skin folds with a black horn. It is mostly found in hot regions and it weighs about 2000 kilograms. The population of one horned Rhinoceros was found to be 2575 individuals.
Kasturi Mriga:
Kasturi Mriga, internationally known as Himalayan Musk Deer is one of the pretty and attractive animals found in the high altitudes of Nepal. It has got high broad toes, dewclaws and bulky coat of hair which makes its very beautiful. It was listed in endangered animals as its population was found less than 1000 in Nepal. Its scientific name is Moschus leucogaster.
Hiu Chituwa:
Hiu Chituwa, internationally known as Snow Leopard is one of the rarest animal in Nepal. They are mainly found in the altitude more than 3000 ft. They are slightly smaller than bigger cats but it weight from 27 to 55 kg. They have got short small body but its tail is quite long. Its scientific name is Panthera Uncia. IUCN has listed this animal as one of the rarest animal as its population in the world is 8700 individuals.
Jangali Hatti:
Jangali Hatti, internationally known as Asiatic Elephant is the huge and rarest animal in land topography of Nepal. Its scientific name is Elephas Maximus. Though Asiatic Elephant are a bit smaller than African elephant, they are more dangerous and wild. Its height weighs upto 2.7 m and its average weight is 4.4 tons. IUCN has listed Jangali Hatti as endangered animal as its wild population in the world is about 41,000.
